These things are interesting on how New England is different than the Midwest.
New England Words
* Frappe=Milkshake, but has a sugary syrup included in it
* Milkshake=Milk and syrup-NO ICE CREAM!!
* Carriage=Shopping Cart
* Crunchie=Tree Hugger
* Bubbly=Water Fountain
* Tenpin=Bowling
* Candle-pin=variation of bowling confined to the New England states. If you say you are going bowling here, people assume it is Candle-pin bowling.
Sayings
* Wicked! and Wicked Awesome!
* All Set? Or All Set! = "Ready?" or basically "Thank you!" or literally "You are all set" ready to go, whatever you want it to mean, I guess.
* And there is the lack of "r" is a lot of things people say, which is really a Massachusetts thing, not a New Hampshire thing. But there are a lot of what we call "Mass-holes" that are migrating up here since the real estate is a lot less here.
* Bull?#@$ is used as an adjective not a noun. That man was bull?S#@
* "He's out to lunch" means someone is stupid.
* And roundabouts or traffic circles. Those are scary when first approached.
* Not a lot of warning on when lanes merge-they don't usually have the signs up showing a lane merge, so beware! Your lane might not last for long!
* You are not required to have car insurance. And you don't have to wear a seat belt if you are over the age of 18.
* They do not euthanize any animal if you take them to the pound. YEAH!!
* There is no state tax on your income! WOO HOO!
* There is no tax on anything other than if you eat out. ( I think?!)
* Some cities do not have trash service, so you take your trash and/or recycling to the transfer station yourself! You can hire an individual to pick-up your trash. And when you do go to the transfer station, bring your dog! Everyone brings their doggie! hee hee!
* Most people have asphalt driveways, so you have to have your driveway resealed ever so many years.
* There are big boulders everywhere! When they build, they have to dig up granite rocks, because we are the "Granite State" That's why most homes have wells and septic tanks.
* The grass has a lot thinner blade here, so people let it grow taller than in the midwest. It is typically about 2.5 inches tall or so. And where your grass doesn't grow, moss will.
* Apparently, it's okay to keep your Christmas decorations up through March.
* You see chipmunks more than squirrels!
* There are animals called Fisher Cats and they like to eat cats!
* They think "Frying a Turkey" is a new thing up here.
* You have to have a snow blower, of course. It snows a lot here. Many people ski here a lot too. I have snowboarded, but not skied yet.
* Also, when people expect lots of snow, everyone puts their windshield wipers up in the air, so they don't have to dig them out from the snow. That was weird the first time I saw it?!
Restaurant Service
* The waitresses and waiters are usually horrible anywhere we have eaten, seems like. So if you want anything, be sure to flag your waitress down, because they won't come back voluntarily!
* There are coat hooks on almost all tables, and in every business. People use them too!
* Everyone, you can bring your children into bars. Now, that's weird?!! I think you can bring them into liquor stores too. And of course, liquor stores are open on Sundays (for you okies, this is cool!)
Shopping
* Wal-mart-seems to be more pleasant to patronage than in any other state I have been in. When people are in your way-not really just in Wal-mart, but any store, they actually move their "carriage" out of your way, and say "Excuse me!" WOW! That is nice!!
Food
* If you like Biscuits and Gravy, good luck finding it on the menu up here! Also, there are no hash browns, they all serve home fries. I don't like home fries! They are basically cubed potatoes that are pan fried, and sometimes have some seasoning and onions. I miss hash browns!!
* There is a lot of seafood up here, but it is almost always fried.
* Lobster Roll-on every menu. It is lobster meat that is mixed with mayonnaise and served on a hot dog bun or a hamburger bun. Cost: $12-20, depending on where you get it. You can even get these at Fast-Food joints?! Worth trying at least once, but not a favorite of mine.
* Lots and lots of ice cream stands around here in the summer. There are very few ice cream stores, so if you want ice cream, you have to stand in a long line outside waiting on your frozen treat.
* There is a Dunkin Donuts literally on every corner. That's where you see people getting their breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the mornings. Don't expect to find too many Starbucks here!
* Fried Dough is what you get NO FUNNEL CAKES?! WHAT?. These guys don't know what they are missing out on, as Funnel Cakes ARE SO MUCH BETTER!
Heating and Cooling
* Most homes are heated with Fuel Oil, and it isn't cheap! Very few homes have air conditioning, but that's because it really doesn't get hot enough in the summer for AC. But luckily, most businesses do have AC.

lol, most home in new hampshire have oil, majority of massachusetts home have gas..and working for an HVAC company a lot of people have ac, we get more calls for no ac then we do no heat!

Ha not in my neighborhood, i had to wait for a family of 6 Squirrels to cross my path one day before i could drive!

you forgot "rotaries" lol thats what i grew up calling them, roundabout is a new word for me

hahah i am a masshole & greg is one too now lol. some realestate in new hampshire is more than around here, when helping greg househunt some of the property taxes in new hampshire was ridiculous!

this is not true in the case of insurance if you do not own your car outright and have a loan on it you are required to have insurance in new hampshire. but it would be stupid not to get it either way since it is cheaper in new hampshire than mass. I certainly would want coverage in either state if i was in an accident or stolen..who wants to pay outright for another vehicle! so the insurance is worth it!
